PROJECT OVERVIEW
Hidden In The Oaks is a personal documentary-style social media brand concept created to share overlooked stories and local history from my hometown. As someone who has always loved storytelling and historical preservation, I wanted to create a platform that could make local history more engaging and accessible to modern audiences.
The name Hidden In The Oaks was developed to reflect the focus on forgotten stories hidden beneath the surface of everyday places. The oak tree was chosen for its strong connection to Southern heritage and longevity. Rather than using an oak tree icon, which felt overused, I designed the logo around an oak door to symbolize a doorway into the past. Oak leaves were incorporated into the typography to further reinforce the brand identity while adding visual interest.
The first piece of content created for the brand is a short-form documentary reel exploring one of Brooksville's most enduring mysteries: the burning of the courthouse. The event resulted in the loss of many important historical records and remains the subject of local speculation, with theories ranging from the concealment of a murder to disputes surrounding land ownership.
For this project, I researched historical newspaper articles and incorporated direct excerpts wherever possible to maintain an objective and historically grounded narrative. Visually, I combined digital stop-motion techniques, vintage-inspired textures, archival imagery, and cinematic transitions to create a sense of age and atmosphere. The music and pacing were intentionally selected to make local history feel more compelling and approachable for younger audiences.
This project is especially meaningful to me because it combines my passion for design, storytelling, and historical preservation. My goal was not only to document an important local story, but also to encourage curiosity about the history that exists within our own communities.
